Juniper Networks Delivers the PTX3000 with 100G Integrated OTN

The proliferation of 100G connectivity in core networks is now spreading to the regional and metro/access areas. The demands in the metro access area are, in fact, similar for scale, connectivity and latency but actually up the bar when it comes to footprint, power utilization and lower BTUs per Gpbs.

Juniper Networks introduced the PTX5000 at OFC in 2011 and shook up the router landscape with the introduction of the first core-optimized  product on the market that delivers a simple architecture, which both content and service providers can leverage.

The company has now introduced the PTX3000, which will play an important role in the metro core as Juniper Networks is now delivering the power of the Supercore in a transport package.

Macroeconomic Conditions and Technology Transitions Affecting SP Video Market

The SP Video market declined 3.3% sequentially and 4.9% Y-Y.  A loss of pay TV subscribers in North America, Europe debt crisis, and a slow-down in China were big contributors to the decreases.  Product and technology transitions also played a role: slow-down in DTA rollouts; transition from SD to HD and from DOCSIS 2.0 to 3.0; and increasing demand for multi-screen capabilities.

OTT video and TV everywhere continues to grow.  OTT is now 58% of peak fixed access bandwidth utilization in North America and is expected to triple over the next five years. In mobile, data OTT is a bigger factor; currently it makes up 54% of total peak traffic and is expected to quadruple in 5 years according to Sandvine.

The pay TV market continues to evolve. In North America, the overall pay TV market declined approximately 300k subs, with cable losing 600k and Telcos adding 300k.  Global IPTV subscribers continue to grow, based on strength in China, India and other emerging countries.  Consequently, cable STB revenues declined 10% Q-Q and over 10% Y-Y, while IPTV STBs increased 2.9%/7.5% (Q-Q/Y-Y).

CMTS market was up 2% sequentially but down 2% Y-Y. Most vendors are shipping their next generation of higher density equipment in volume.

Despite the down quarter, SP Video infrastructure spending should pick up in 2H 2012. Many SPs have spent less than half of their 2011 CapEx budget in 1H 2012, and they are projecting flat CapEx spend from 2011 to 2012.

Operational Efficiency of Super-Channels

Eve Griliches, ACG Research, and Dave Welch, Infinera, discuss the benefits of flexible modulation and OTN integration

Watch Eve Griliches, packet optical analyst at ACG Research and Dave Welch, cofounder and executive vice president at Infinera, explain, using an example, the operational efficiency of super-channels, the benefits of flexible modulation and OTN integration.

Infinera has integrated the OTN fabric into the DTN-X, providing significant operational benefit while meeting power, footprint and bandwidth requirements. With bandwidth outpacing chip development, super-channels are the key technology to enable higher bandwidth deployment today.

Eve and Dave explain why 16-QAM is limited in reach for all vendors and carriers, and what the implementation penalties are. They also discuss the increased spectral efficiency and how it is still a win-win for shorter, highly concentrated routes and how with one line card in the DTN-X, you can configure sub-terrestrial distances and high bandwidth congested routes, which enables a new paradigm for optical networking.

Infinera Introduces the DTN-X: Innovation from the Ground Up

At 5T Infinera's DTN-X is the largest integrated WDM/OTN product today; it is upgradable to 10T per bay and will include a 100 Tb/s system in the future. In various configurations the DTN-X can support up to 24T on a single fiber.

With 150 patents backing it up, Infinera is introducing the DTN-X with a "clean slate design." The DTN-X uses the 500G coherent technology Photonic Integrated Circuit (PIC) combined with large-scale OTN switching and grooming. The backplane supports 1 Tb/s/slot and is designed to support a multibay approach to larger configurations. This is the largest OTN/WDM switched transport product announced to date.

Eventually, the DTN-X will support MPLS with LSR functionality to enable statistical multiplexing. Perhaps the most unique quality of this new product is its uncompromising scale. It can support up to 5T of WDM line side 500G super channels or 5T of client side services, all with nonblocking OTN switching with the ability to “dial up or down” without tradeoffs. In various configurations the DTN-X can support up to 24T on a single fiber.
